Hebrew word · Strong's H1697

דָּבָר

dâbâr · daw-baw' · noun · “word, matter, thing”

In a sentence

Dabar means word, matter, or thing — but especially the powerful, effective word of God that creates, commands, and accomplishes what it says.

Dabar spans “word,” “matter,” and “event,” reflecting a worldview where God’s word makes things happen. “The word (dabar) of the LORD” came to the prophets and went out to do his will.

God’s word is not idle: “so shall my word be… it shall not return to me empty.” The dabar that spoke creation into being is the same word that guides, warns, and saves his people.
