Lazarus of Bethany

The friend of Jesus whom he raised from the dead after four days in the tomb—one of the Gospels’ greatest signs.

Brother of Mary and Martha, Lazarus fell ill and died. Jesus arrived to find him already buried, wept at the tomb, and then called, ‘Lazarus, come out!’

The raising of Lazarus displayed Jesus’ power over death and his claim, ‘I am the resurrection and the life.’ It also hardened his opponents against him.
