David

Israel’s shepherd-king, author of many psalms, a man ‘after God’s own heart’ — and an ancestor of Jesus.

Anointed as a youth and famous for defeating Goliath, David became Israel’s greatest king. He united the nation and longed to build God a temple; God instead promised him an everlasting dynasty.

David’s life held both deep faith and serious failure, including his sin with Bathsheba and his repentance. Many psalms flow from his joys and sorrows, and Jesus is called the ‘Son of David.’
